Lead Horticulturist

 

The Delaware Center for Horticulture (DCH) inspires individuals and communities through the power of plants. We seek a self-driven, experienced professional to serve as lead horticulturist in DCH’s greening and education programs. Responsibilities include the development and implementation of standards in horticultural excellence and environmental stewardship for sponsored/contracted landscapes, while ensuring the successful, high-quality maintenance of these spaces and their associated contracts. Direct reports to this position include a full-time greening supervisor who oversees a seasonal team and an urban horticulture intern (May – July). DCH’s lead horticulturist is also responsible for the creative design, seasonal display, and maintenance of the gardens around DCH, which require advance planning and volunteer coordination. This position also contributes horticultural expertise to other greening projects, DCH’s Branches to Chances program, and the Rare Plant Auction®.


The lead horticulturist is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position reporting to the Director of Programs and Impact. This position requires a collaborative approach to working with staff across all departments of the organization, as well as an ability to excel at both hands-on and administrative tasks. Experience in developing contract proposals, estimating and budget management are also highly preferred skills. Compensation is based on experience.

A willingness to experiment, test new ideas, and pursue new opportunities;
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent job experience in the field;
An interest in/familiarity with public/nonprofit horticulture institutions;
Ability to meet the physical demands of outdoor work, including the ability to lift 50 lbs;
DE pesticide applicator license for integrated pest management, or the ability to obtain;
Strong leadership skills including direct supervisory experience.
