Help for the Home Gardener Lectures

Inspiration and expert advice to make your home environment more attractive and your gardening experience more enjoyable. No experience necessary – just bring your enthusiasm for gardens and gardening. Refreshments will be served.

 

Members: $10 per lecture, $40 for series of 5 lectures

Non-members: $15 per lecture, $60 for series of 5 lectures

 

HFHG: Part 1 - The Artful Garden with Elizabeth Schumacher

Specialty plants and art objects can help personalize your outdoor space and serve as an important focal point.  Liz Schumacher – a Barnes horticulture alumnus, creator of an award winning garden, and owner of Garden Accents of West Conshohocken, Pa. – has traveled the world collecting sculptures, fountains and garden furnishings. She will help you see your garden with a fresh perspective, and provide tips on using art objects and plant material effectively. Pre-registration is required.

He’ll also discuss how to successfully care for newly planted trees and highlight various ways to maximize the environmental and aesthetic benefits in your landscape. HFHG: Part 3 - A Grand Teacher: Women & Gardening in the Progressive Era with Jane Roy Brown

The story of One Writer’s Garden: Eudora Welty’s Home Place unfolds during the rise of American home gardening in the 1920s, when women viewed it as a means of self-improvement. The lecture by coauthor Jane Roy Brown sets the garden of writer Eudora Welty (1909-2001) in the context of garden-making in the early twentieth century, discussing the “new” suburban garden of the 1920s, Progressive-era woman’s clubs, and the rise of garden clubs. HFHG: Part 4 - Witch Hazels: The Prince of Winter with Randy Kobetich

Tired of looking out a winter window and seeing a sleeping garden?  Winter can be long for gardeners, but this season does have its rewards.  Many shrubs have fantastic blossoms or berries that make the season sparkle.  Join local plant enthusiast Randy Kobetich as he introduces you to the world of Witch Hazels.  This low maintenance shrub will add a wonderful burst of bright yellow, orange or red flowers to your winter landscape.  The color and fragrance alone will make your garden walk worth the chill in the air! Do you love to eat locally grown produce, but feel intimidated to grow it yourself?  Want to start a vegetable garden but don’t know where to begin?  Join Harold Taylor, section gardener in the Idea Garden at Longwood Gardens, for an evening of edible exploration.  Harold will discuss the entire home vegetable gardening topic from planting to harvesting.  Learn when to sow seeds, discover what vegetables are most worth growing, and learn Harold’s secrets on avoiding pest problems.
