HFHG: Part 1 - The Artful Garden with Elizabeth Schumacher

Specialty plants and art objects can help personalize your outdoor space and serve as an important focal point.  Liz Schumacher – a Barnes horticulture alumnus, creator of an award winning garden, and owner of Garden Accents of West Conshohocken, Pa. – has traveled the world collecting sculptures, fountains and garden furnishings. She will help you see your garden with a fresh perspective, and provide tips on using art objects and plant material effectively. Pre-registration is required.

The Artful Garden is the first of five lectures in the Help for the Home Gardener Series. Every Wednesday in February, find inspiration and expert advice to make your home environment more attractive and your gardening experience more enjoyable. Light refreshments will be served.

Garden Accents

A failed attempt to find a garden ornament for their terraced garden three decades ago led avid gardeners Elizabeth and her husband Ralph into a lifelong passion and delightful business. They finally found the piece they were looking for in a pawn shop in Mexico, and the rest is history.

Liz began studying horticulture at the Barnes Foundation four decades ago to adorn a barren hill near their home with specimen plants. That hill has developed into an award winning garden and became home to numerous unique artifacts from many countries and cultures.  Today, their LOCATION showroom boasts beautiful bronze fountains from Italy, antique lead statues from England, stone lanterns from Japan, and more.

A published garden writer, Liz lectures to garden clubs, universities, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and more. Her pieces have enhanced many award winning exhibits at the Philadelphia Flower Show, Vassar Design House and other local events. In 1996, Garden Accents won the blue ribbon for their first commercial booth at the Philadelphia Flower Show and a First Prize in 1999 and 2000. Philadelphia Magazine rated Garden Accents “Best of Philly” in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2006.
